Discipline V.S. Freedom

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.    The Bible, Hebrews, 12:11

One’s adoption of discipline does not necessarily oppose his/her chasing after freedom. It is easy for us to assume that once we follow the rules and boundaries, we are restrained and controlled.

Imagine our world without all the rules and boundaries, how will we be? At the beginning we indulge within the breeze of limitlessness. Then reality hits in. At the end of the day, we still need to clean up the mess, empty the full plate, pay the bills.

And this is the reality of life. We can never always have the fireworks in our every moment, and when we don’t, we still need to deal with the ordinary routines and responsibilities.

Freedom always come together with discipline. Without discipline, freedom is egocentric, conflicting and scattered. Without freedom, discipline is meaningless, dehumanizing.

For some, discipline has been a tormenting shield from breaking free. Authoritative obstruction to allowance of mistakes and carelessness; fun and irregularity.

For others, freedom is an insecure territory from stability. Out of control. Unknown and often not making sense.

On choosing between discipline and freedom, I believe there is a balance in between. As we fixate on either one side, let us also attend to the beauty of the other.

Now often under the glamorous and sophisticated world, we are caught up by the beauty of “the free sense”, and avoid the plain/repetitive discipline.

Freedom is not just about breaking free, but there are also the essential elements of righteousness and peace which can be filled by one’s practice of discipline.

Under discipline, not only do we value the essence of freedom, but also we enjoy it with security and peaceful heart.

For those under desperate chase of breaking free and maintain the sense of freedom, perhaps discipline is the way.
